An Upstate mother learned her fate on Wednesday after admitting to poisoning her baby daughter with a deadly amount of salt.
Kimberly Martines was arrested in 2016 when 17-month-old Peyton Martines was brought to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Investigators said Peyton was placed on life support after suffering from acute salt poisoning.
The overdose caused the baby’s brain to shut down. She was later taken off life support and died.
Martines initially told investigators Peyton and her twin sister got into a bag of salt left out overnight. Her 4-year-old son later told investigators he watched his mom feed the baby a full spoon of salt and described the bag in detail.
