President Barack Obama placed a call to Hillary Clinton which succeeded in persuading her to concede from the presidential race, according to an upcoming book covering Clinton’s defeat.
This information came from authors Arnie Parnes and Jonathan Allen who cite three Clinton sources familiar with the election-night request in the unreleased book from Crown Publishing.
Obama told his former Secretary of State, “You need to concede,” as her family and top aides continued to watch the results pour in, likely in a state of shock and disbelief. It wasn’t until after Pennsylvania was officially called at 1:30 AM by the Associated Press, a clear tipping point in the election count which ensured Donald Trump would surpass the 270 electoral-vote count needed to secure the presidency.
Hillary Clinton finally heeded the advice of President Obama and called Trump to acknowledge her defeat.
White House officials did not immediately return requests for comment Friday.
Obama’s call left a sour taste in the mouths of some Clinton allies who believe she should have waited longer, and there’s now a fight playing out between the Obama and Clinton camps over whether to support an effort to force the Rust Belt states to recount their votes.
