An East Texas woman is in custody after stealing a police car while handcuffed and then leading officers on a chase that reached nearly 100 mph before she crashed. Police say 33-year-old Toscha Sponsler of Lufkin had been detained for shoplifting and was in the back of a police car when she managed to get out of one of the cuffs, squeeze through a partition, crawl into the front seat and take off. She’s now jailed on multiple charges.
She waived medical treatment at the scene and was taken to the Angelina County Jail where she remains on a collective $18,000 bond.
Sponsler is charged with escape causing serious bodily injury/threat of a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against a public servant, possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest with a vehicle with a previous conviction and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
